| The Rev Dr George Hemming, OF, OBE |
A medical practitioner and church minister, the Reverend Dr George Hemming was first and foremost a humanitarian. Together with JP Bayly he established the Bayly clinic in 1954, which he ran for almost 30 years.
At his insistence, a social welfare department was established with the clinic, which was a vital source of emergency assistance for the destitute and hungry. Dr Hemming once wrote that 'the problem of health in Fiji is not so much a problem of medicine, as a social and economic one'. As Chairman of the JP Bayly Trust, Dr Hemming directed its considerable resources to providing practical assistance to the poor, in particular to the building of low-cost housing.
Through his efforts, Dr Hemming created a safety net for the most vulnerable in society, which has continued to this day.
He passed away in Auckland, New Zealand on 26th July 2003 at a ripe age of 95.
