Reward for Students

More than 100 students were honored yesterday by their sponsor for an outstanding academic performance this year. The 108 students sponsored by Bayly Welfare were given Christmas gifts and trophies for their academic achievements.

Satishwar Chand, the Bayly Welfare Almoner, Northern Division said the students performed well in school. “Every year we show our appreciation to them through the awards day giving our students Christmas gifts to celebrate their hard work.

“Majority of our students done remarkably well in school and we have receive positive feedback from teachers,” Mr Chand said. A follow up with students and teachers has been imperative for the Bayly committee in the north.

Mr Chand said the weekly follow up with schools resulted in good academic performance by students. “They all attend different schools but we make sure that we visit the schools and talk to teachers about the children’s performances. This is important because it helps us talk to our sponsored students and it makes our work easier in guiding and helping them,” Mr Chand said.

“Most of our students usually top their classes with internal and external exams and we believe the support from home and from Bayly Welfare has helped the children.

Service to Mankind

Many times life does not turn out to be what we initially hope and thrive for in our earlier years- then due to wrong choices made in life and various other factors, families find themselves in hopeless and vulnerable situations. Statistics in the country have also shown that more than 90% of Fiji lives below the poverty line.

The term 'capacity building' today seems to be the way forward for people in these situations. We must empower children with positive discipline and proper education. Education is the only way out of poverty. Education in school can not be fully effective unless the education in the home is fully exhausted.

Thus the role of parents has always been important. I personally express my deepest gratitude to the Bayly Trust for their unfailing support in ensuring families like mine are provided the education, medical assistance and welfare benefits needed to raise our children to be great Fiji citizens of tomorrow.

Through the enlightenment we receive from Mrs Michael and her team, we learn to constantly re-look at ourselves and tap into skills we could use to survive. Thus the simple life of gardening and appreciating things around us is our focus. Proper time management is taught to ensure that we be all resilient to the challenges that face us.

To Mrs Michael and her team (mainly who are volunteers) thank you so much for all the good works you are doing. God bless the JP Bayly Trust of Fiji.

Bayly Educates On Risks

A counseling workshop to educate children on the dangers around their community was organized by the Bayly Welfare Trust during the second term school holidays.

According to Bayly Welfare Almoner in Lautoka Sarojni Michael this workshop was very vital taking into consideration the rising number of abuses against the young children.

Present at the workshop were Senior Almoner Mr. Chandra from Suva, Inspector Apao Kauata of Lautoka Police Station, Arieta Drodrolagi and Unaisi Navusa of Pacific Counseling and Social Services and Mr. Arvin Kumar the Head Teacher of Tavarau Bhartiya School. Mrs. Michael, Education Officer Radhika Latchmi, Chairperson Mrs. Stella Smith and other members of Bayly Welfare Lautoka.

Michael revealed that all these members were invited to come and talk to the children and their parents/guardian of the need to be aware of the changes happening around them, dangers of glue sniffing, truancy and disrespect.

She informed that one of the key issues also discussed during this event was physical and mental abuse in both homes and schools and even out on the streets.

“We believe these counseling sessions should continue with our student and their parents as we can see the positive outcome,

“We also involved parents and guardians as we believe they are the main role models since children are with them most of the time.”

She added that children were also reminded that free education was not something to be taken lightly it was indeed a great step forward in building a better life and the children needed to understand this.

Michael revealed that they continuously advise all their recipients to make the most of what ever assistance they get” for the betterment of their future.

Wheels for Life

It was one of the happiest days for Jay Wati of Labasa, when a timely gift was presented to her by the Labasa Almoner Satishwar Chand.  Recently Wati had suffered from a major stroke and was completely bedridden and her only daughter who is mentally unwell was helpless. Their neighbour has voluntarily been caring for Wati and she said that it was dreadful to see the daughter using a sack as method of moving Wati.

Wati was even more delighted when the Labasa Almoner delivered a wheelchair for he to use and thus become more mobile. The Labasa Almoner’s application for the donation of wheelchairs from Spinal Injuries Association was favourably considered and in July this year 6 wheelchairs were kindly donated.  

Wati now is now able to sit on her terrace and meet and communicate with her visitors. She added that she had become very depressed after the passing away of her mentally disturbed son a year ago which eventually resulted in her stroke. The only income she has is $70.00 from Social Welfare Family Allowance and the monthly food assistance from Bayly Welfare.

She feels that she forms part of the Bayly Welfare family having been one of the families being assisted since 1997 and they have always been there in her times of need. “Without this help my life would have been in dark. I pray to the almighty God for a long life to all the people who are associated with this organization. Once again I thank all from the bottom of my heart” Wati concluded.
